Business Update

Our account management team has been rocking and rolling with new opportunities all over the country. In fact, the Material Handling Team is currently quoting 7 Opex Sorter relocations for 2024.
If you think we’re busy now…just wait!
In the meantime, SilMan can celebrate several notable developments on the business development side of things.
Lastly, our Civil Team has recently completed a successful concrete project for the C&H Sugar VF Room and Equipment installation, pictured above.

From The Field
Rock Around the Clock

Did you know that we have Team Members onsite at a NorCal steel mill 24/7? Amazing, but true!
In fact, this ongoing maintenance program is marking its one-year anniversary!
The undertaking reflects the deep and abiding relationship SilMan enjoys with UPI, aka US Steel. The origins of our work go back to 2010 when a concrete job brought our team to the premises for the first time.
And like so many other instances, we’ve been there ever since.
Over the years our teams have provided a broad range of projects for UPI, including major infrastructure improvement, equipment updates, and maintenance.
Our current tasks are focused on keeping UPI’s facility and equipment in good working order. Specifically:
Local 302 has been an amazing partner for this undertaking, helping SilMan to assemble and sustain a highly skilled team for this challenging, long-term assignment.
Our Electrical Team superstars are
- Manny Reyes, Nick Fischer Joseph Arruda, Michael Corpuz, Matt Jorgensen, Julian Navarro
But wait…There’s more!
Civil Team at UPI
In addition to this ongoing service with UPI, our civil team was recently called upon to repair an underground pipeline on the premises.
- Team members: Amos Martinez, Rafael Cornejo, Jose Martinez, and Nicolas Montiel-Torres.
A little bit of history: the water system beneath UPI is fed from Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta, and predates the establishment of the UPI, and the city of Pittsburg itself.

Rick said:
“Through a Decade long partnership with UPI Our Team has gone above and beyond to nourish this relationship, building lasting friendships and ensuring the continuous operation of this iconic Bay Area Steel Mill. Together we have written a history of resilience and commitment to preserve the legacy of this plant and the City of Pittsburg.”

Meet Jeremy Hendrix

Jeremy Hendrix comes to SilMan’s Tupelo Engineering Team from…Tupelo!
That’s right, our SAPS Engineer is as local as it gets, including as a star of his high school band drumline. He also earned a spot in the Mississippi Lion Band, an all-state honors ensemble, and a trip to Hawaii. After high school, he kept the beats rocking with the Mississippi State band.
His father is an engineer working in the automobile manufacturing industry. This was a powerful image for Jeremy, and he grew up fascinated with building things. And being good at math.
Hendrix is a recent graduate of Mississippi State. He spoke highly about the collaborative culture as MSU, and how it set him up for working in an interactive place like SilMan Engineering.
His first impression of SilMan was an ad for a SAPS Engineer. “This is exactly what I am looking for,” he said. The rest is history.
Jeremy is active in his church, running the Sunday School program.
What is your favorite part of working at SilMan?
“I love the open, communicative atmosphere at SilMan. I also appreciate Garrett’s support, helping me connect with the engineering team.” – Jeremy

Safety Tip
What is Lockout/Tagout?

- “It’s better to lose one minute in life…than to lose life in a minute, so always Lockout Tagout” – Dr. Nallini Gulati
LOTO, or Lockout/Tagout, is a term for a safety program/process that protects workers from being maimed or killed by the unexpected startup or release of stored energy of live process machinery or equipment, during routine installation, maintenance or repair work.
OSHA’s FactSheet on Controlling Hazardous Energy, shows that compliance with Lockout/Tagout standards prevents an estimated 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries each year. Clearly it is essential to understand and invest in LOTO procedures when working with live equipment.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at five best practice for an effective LOTO program.
In conclusion, plan ahead to eliminate all sources of energy before working on any live or potentially live equipment. This will ensure you are working in a safe and controlled environment.

Reflections On The Way We Work & Connect
Harnessing the Power of “Moments”
Moments…you know immediately what I’m talking about: those flashes in life, small and fleeting, or grand and unforgettable.
These moments have the remarkable ability to shape our experiences, relationships, and outcomes. By nurturing our awareness of these moments, we can unlock new levels of success, connection, and fulfillment.
Powerful moments help us on our journey to success:
- Lasting Impressions: Moments have a profound impact on memories. When we design moments that are positive, meaningful, and emotionally resonant, they become etched in our minds and the minds of those around us. These memories can influence how we perceive our work, our team, and our organization as a whole.
- Collaboration: Moments foster deeper connections between individuals and teams. By intentionally creating shared experiences that celebrate achievements, milestones, or simply moments of joy, we strengthen our bonds and build a stronger sense of “Team” unity
- Motivation and Inspiration: Moments have the power to ignite inspiration and fuel motivation. When we experience moments of triumph, breakthroughs, or recognition, we feel a surge of energy and enthusiasm. By deliberately crafting these moments, we can cultivate a culture of positivity, drive, and continuous growth.
To harness the power of moments effectively, we must be intentional, personalize, reflect, and learn from each situation. Each of us has the power to shape moments and make a lasting difference. Let’s embrace this power, elevate our work and relationships, and create a thriving environment where exceptional moments are cherished.
Together, let’s unlock the full potential of the power of moments and pave the way to extraordinary achievements.
