MODEX 2024, Day One

MODEX 2024 was held earlier this month in Atlanta, Georgia. This bi-annual tradeshow is hosted by Material Handling International (MHI) and occurs in even-numbered years. Its sister event, ProMat, is held on odd-numbered years in Chicago. These events are part Sales and Marketing and part Education, offering a crucial opportunity for our MH team to connect with clients, partners, and prospects, and keep up with trending technologies.

Attendance at the conference was 48,733, an increase of 37% over 2022 rivaling the numbers achieved by ProMat, underscoring the necessity of SilMan’s presence. Stay tuned as we continue to deepen our association with these conferences in upcoming years.

  • SilMan attendees include engineering team members Bryce Addy, Eric Bickford, Eric Cleckner, Garrett King, Harrison Rupp, Ian Fulton, Justin Green, Kevin Jackson, and Sean Johnson – along with the business development team: Ben Ohmart, David Rebata, Steve Emahiser, and Tom.

  • The number-one takeaway at MODEX is to recognize the broad awareness SilMan Industries has achieved in this space. This market penetration directly reflects our team’s performance in designing and delivering our unique experience as promised.

SAPS has recently reached two notable milestones

First, we received a Design-Build RFP where the mechanical parking 3-part specification was largely based on the SAPS 3-part specification. The quality and detail of the document have been noticed and adopted by a new architectural partner, Leddy Maytum Stacey Architects. Hats off to the engineering team for embracing this effort in 2023 and to our team members and partners who have supported client visits to existing systems. In March we submitted our first proposal on a project where SilMan Automated Parking Systems was listed as the only qualified supplier!

Secondly, our new continuing education course for architects “Mechanical Parking is a Catalyst for Innovation in Building Design” is available online. We have partnered with  AEC Daily to help reach this market and to manage course credits with the American Institute of Architects (AIA).  This course is our primary conduit to introduce SAPS to new architects.

Idling a Steel Plant

Images from the first few weeks at UPI…just a few things going on!

SilMan Industries has recently accepted the caretaker role for a classic American industrial complex. The Asset and Property Management project for US Steel, aka UPI, is perfectly matched for our company. The Pittsburg, California property is steeped with ingenuity, organization, and productivity and is embedded in a community, forming the bedrock of sustenance for generations of families. Some of our team members working on this project reside in Pittsburg today.

We were first called to the premises in 2009 to replace a wood floor with modified concrete, back when the company was called USS-POSCO. Over the next 15 years, our visits spanned repair, maintenance, and installation of production equipment and facility support.

This time, however, we have been asked to help our client close the plant with care to be passed to a new 21st-century enterprise as a valuable asset.

Scope of Work

For various reasons, the owner is not immediately proceeding with Decommissioning the plant. Instead, the production line will be Idled for the near future. Nonetheless, the Idling process requires a complex process to ensure team member safety, equipment integrity, and communication with all stakeholders.

Beyond the civil-mechanical-electrical aspects, SilMan is also responsible for managing 500+ acres of land. But our responsibility doesn’t end at the fence line. The neighboring communities are built over the water system that serves the plant, which was established over a century ago.

Build the Team

One of the bright rays of light of the plant’s closure is the opportunity to hire five previous UPI employees with extensive experience and depth of knowledge about the UPI operation:

  • Angela Marin: Purchasing

  • Francisco Perez (Mundo): Reliability Manager

  • Matt Teeples: Field Services-Electrical

  • Pedro Preciado: Field Services-Mechanical

  • Silas Graves: Automation Controls Engineer

These individuals were slated to be displaced by the plant’s closure. We are pleased to add them to the team and are thankful for the unique value they bring to the team.

The Big Picture

Lastly, in addition to being a great project to showcase our specialized skills and experience, this contract helps us to solidify a growing field of expertise for our company: decommission, dismantling, and asset management. SilMan can truly claim to offer specialty trade services for the entire life cycle of equipment and facilities.

  • 2010, NUMMI/Toyota: Shutdown of Fremont auto plant and relocation to Blue Springs, Mississippi.
  • 2015, United Spiral Pipe (EVRAZ): Shutdown and relocation of heavy-duty tooling and machining equipment.
  • 2020, Berkey Farms: Shutdown and relocation of large tanks for beverage production.

“Community support and involvement are the pillars of our success. We believe in creating opportunities that allow others to contribute their expertise and enrich our team. It is truly remarkable that being awarded a job from a favored client not only expands our business but also enables us to welcome five new team members with an intimate understanding of the property, each with over 20-30 years of experience. This not only ensures the continuity of care for the assets and facilities that have been a staple of our community for over 100 years but also reinforces our commitment to fostering a thriving and inclusive community.” – Rick

Meet Ray Hawkins

ray hawkins and his wife

Ray Hawkins was raised in a military family and hails from Clarksville, Tennessee (Ft Campbell). While the family moved several times, they always returned to Clarksville. As a youth, Ray was engaged in dismantling and reassembling items. It was a hobby that later evolved into enrolling in the Electronics Radio/TV Repair program at his high school.

Nearly 25 years ago, Hawkins moved to Paris, Tennessee, two hours west of Nashville, for a job implementing robotics and automation for automotive part manufacturer Dana Corporation. He later served as the IT manager for a long-term care pharmaceutical company before arriving at SilMan in 2015.

Ray supports the SilMan Team as a project and site manager and controls engineer. He has strutted his formidable programming chops on robotic projects such as SGI and BASF.

Outside the office, Ray enjoys running, cycling, and slow cooked BBQ on the deck alongside his wife, daughter, son-in-law, two energetic grandchildren, and their two dogs.  He is also an avid shooter, competing at his local gun club in Precision Rimfire, with timed stages spanning 50-400 yards with a .22lr (Yes, a .22 @400 yards!), and USPSA (US Practical Shooting Association) matches in Pistol Caliber Carbine (more high-speed firing and moving targets).

And when it’s time to get away, Ray and his wife head to the beach in Panama City, Florida.

What is your favorite part about working at SilMan?

“At SilMan, I know if I call Rick or Tom, either will pick up the phone and say, ‘Ray, how are you doing?’ I have been around long enough to know that there are not too many places where employees would ever call the owner. But the bottom line for me, this is a really great team of people to work with.” – Ray

Safety Tip

Back to Basics

doctor hold a sign which reads "health is wealth"

All of us work very hard and long hours, not only for SilMan but also for our families. But while we are very fortunate to have such a fantastic Team that values Safety, we can easily overlook the core elements that keep us safe: personal health. So here is a reminder for us all that we also need to take care of ourselves. Personal health is at the heart of making it home safely to our families, each and every day.

  • No Drugs/Alcohol:  The use of drugs/alcohol at work is against company policy, but its use before work can also be a costly mistake. The influence of drugs/alcohol can alter our minds and cause serious injuries/fatalities, even if we are hungover.

  • Get Sleep:  Being sleep-deprived can lead to altered mental states and poor judgment, which can cause severe/fatal injuries. Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep per night to avoid feeling tired and falling asleep behind the wheel. Getting enough sleep will support our overall health, mental alertness, and clarity.

  • Stay Hydrated:  Staying hydrated can help regulate our core body temperature, prevent fatigue, and promote mental alertness. The recommended average daily water consumption is approximately 16 cups or 1 gallon. More water may be necessary for those working in high-heat environments or special work conditions.

  • Eat Healthy:  Eating healthy will make you feel better, more energized, and lighter. It promotes better digestion, which prevents you from feeling sluggish and bloated.

  • Stay Energized:  Daily exercise will improve your health, mental awareness, cardiovascular strength, muscle tone, and flexibility. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day.

And here is a bonus for our traveling teammates.

These items may not always be at the top of our minds each day, so I hope we can all benefit from a friendly reminder.

Playas Ball by Outkast

Alex Kim is our Accounting Manager and one of our newest team members, joining the team in November 2023. He enjoys spending his free time attending music and art events and creating music himself in his home studio.

His favorite band is Outkast because “they have music for every mood.” Alex said the band originally used the name to protest how the hip-hop community dismissed the Atlanta music scene.  Things have changed!

“‘Playas Ball” is the perfect song for driving, which is one of the best ways to experience music, in my opinion. It creates a feeling of winning before the game has been played and makes me walk with a certain strut with my chin held high. Fun fact: “Plays Ball” was originally intended to be a Christmas song…so it’s  also my favorite Christmas song!” – Alex

Reflections On The Way We Work & Connect

We recently took a deep dive into an acronym that has helped us form the culture we all enjoy. Three simple letters guide us on our path to building and maintaining meaningful relationships;

A.C.T

Accountability promotes Trust, respect, and mutual understanding, which is essential for fostering a meaningful connection.

Open and honest Communication allows individuals to express their needs, concerns, and aspirations, fostering a deeper understanding of each other and working towards a common goal.

Teamwork encourages a sense of unity, belonging, and shared responsibility, fostering a stronger and more meaningful relationship.  By working as a Team, we can pool our strengths and skills, complement each other’s weaknesses, and achieve far more than we could individually

Accountability, Communication, and Teamwork are essential for a meaningful relationship as they promote Trust, understanding, collaboration, and shared responsibility. These elements enable individuals and teams to build a solid FOUNDATION. They also allow us to navigate challenges together and create fulfilling and lasting connections.
